I wanted to take this opportunity to update you all on this year's flu vaccination campaign and the three groups of patients which are eligible and the importance of each group receiving the correct type of vaccine, in line with NHS England and Public Health England guidelines:
For children aged 2 to 17 years the live attenuated influenza vaccine (LAIV) continues to be the recommended vaccine, unless contraindicated. The eligibility criteria for children is that they must be aged two to ten (but not eleven years or older) on 31 August 2019.
For those aged 18 to 64 years in 'at risk' groups the QUAD vaccine should be given which will be made available from mid to end of October this year due to a delay in the supply of this vaccine from NHS England and Public Health England. Please advise patients to wait until October before contacting the practice to book for these clinics.
For those aged 65 and over, the trivalent vaccine, FLUAD, is specifically for this patient group. This will arrive tomorrow, from 3rd September, and I have created templates for clinics with both our nurses and Jane starting from week commencing 9th September onwards. FLUAD vaccine cannot be re-ordered and supplies are very limited therefore it is vital that this vaccine is only offered to 65s and over and no other patient groups.
Thanks for your cooperation.
